How to install home LED strip lights

Led strip lights are great for decorating your home. The simple and sleek design can embellish the colour of your home and enhance the atmosphere. Installing LED strip lights is not ‘rocket science’ and even the novice DIY enthusiastic can do it. LEDs come in rolls which are easy to set up even if you don’t have any electrical experience. Strip lights are easy to install with a fantastic combination of colour options. Here are 4 ways to help you install your LED strip lights.

Step 1: Check your surface type

Before adhering any strip lights, clean the surface of the area you will be placing the lights on. It’s recommended to apply your LED strip lights on a smooth stable surface. A rough texture like an Artex or ‘popcorn’ texture ceiling will require a different method of attaching the LEDs. Excessive moisture or higher temperatures will also wear away at the adhesive.

Our Fuchusi LED strip lights come ready with a built-in adhesive on the back, which can be used on any ceiling type. Our clever design gives convenience and simplicity for use in many interior bonding applications. It allows quick and easy installation and your lights are protected in high temperature areas.

Step 2: Locate a power source and measure the length of your LED strip light

Plan the location of where you want to place your LED strip light, which can be plugged into an outlet or can be connected to the mains power supply. Take a measuring tape and measure the length of the LED strip lights you will need to cover the whole area. Remember, it’s always best to add a little bit of extra length to your strip light incase of any bends or tight spots.

Step 3: Install the LED lights on your chosen surface

Peel some of the adhesive backing off one end of the strip and press the LEDs in place. Start at one end of the surface and continue peeling the backing off the LED strip as you continue to position your strip light on your chosen location.

Remember, it’s simple and straightforward if you want to make your LED strip longer using connectors. Strip connectors are packaged with your LED lights to help you connect two pieces of strips together.

Cutting the LED strip light

Cut the LEDs to the size using the dotted lines on the strip. They are usually positioned between copper dots along each light. Be sure to make a clean straight cut only in these designated sections. Cutting it in a non-designated area will damage the strip lights.

LED strip mounting clips

These clips use one screw for each clip to attach to the ceiling and hold the strip in place if the adhesive doesn't stick well onto the surface. The other side is firm under fixing, making your strip light easier to install with durable transparent plastic for high temperature resistance. These clips are relatively cheap so you can always double up on them for extra assurance.

LED strip mounting channel

These are perfect to give a clean and sophisticated look. LED strip mounting channels are great for improving appearance, adding diffusers and providing proper stability to your strip lights. The LEDs adhere easily to the back of the mounting channel while some offer UV covers that are able to hide the actual strip while letting the light through. Make sure to measure the width of the mounting channels so they fit with your LEDs.

Step 4: Connect your strip lights to the power source

At the end of your LED strip light you can use the extra length as an extension cord to attach it to the controller and power adapter, then plug it into an electrical socket. Next, simply use your remote or mobile phone app to select the colour you want and you’re good to go!

However, if you wish to connect your LED strip lights to your mains power supply, you still have some extra steps. We recommend you contact your local electrician for help doing this.
